This appliance is not for the average home kitchen, but might appeal to foodies who are serious about charcuterie (sausages, patés etc.) or to others who make ground meats on a regular basis, or even pet foods. I think it would also be suitable for caterers or smaller restaurants.

For the home kitchen, it's main downside is it's weight and bulk - the chore of lugging it to or from it's storage space might make you wonder why you bought it. However, if you use it frequently (as you should, if you bought it), you'll probably leave it out and use it often. If you've been used to the "grrr... grrr... grrr..." sound of a KitchenAid grinder attachment, then you'll appreciate the "wzzzz... wzzz...wzzz..." sound of he Northern.

The made-in-China fit and finish of some parts are funky, but remain fully functional - the worm is no longer polished as it once was, and the blades (2 are included) may need flattening on a whetstone before use. Because of this, I would have rated this product 4 1/2 stars - however, my experience with Northern's customer service dept. warrants a 5 star rating - if there are any problems, they will make it right.
